Standard Mantel Height

If you are keeping your wood or gas fireplace then you may want to consider placing the tv off to one side and not above the mantel.

An 8 inch depth must have a minimum height clearance of 17 inches. The thing is the mantel height is not going to change that much in room with a higher ceiling either.
The highest i have ever seen is 59 but most fireplace mantels range between 52 57 for an eight foot ceiling. A 4 inch depth must have a minimum height clearance of 13 inches. Your fireplace may fit this dimension or it might be on the shorter or taller end of the spectrum when it comes to mantel height above fireplace. As such there is some flexibility with personal preference when it comes to the height of your mantle the average height ranges between 50 and 60 inches because as a general rule mantles are never lower than 50 inches but they can be above 60 depending on what look and feel you are going for in your house.
If you put a tv above that mantel it will be too high for comfortable viewing in the average size room. Measure the length height and width of the firebox and facing. The mantel above a traditional wood burning or gas fireplace is typically 48 or more off the floor.
